United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked on September 11, 2001, crashed near Ligonier, PA. The crash site is near Shanksville and Stonycreek Township, PA, south of U.S. 30 and north of I-70. There is currently a temporary Flight 93 National Memorial, and a permanent memorial is scheduled to be completed by the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Don and Arleen Giesey live nearby in Ligonier, PA. Don was working outside at the time. He witnessed the plane flying very low and erratically. It went over the horizon, and he saw the resulting billowing smoke from the crash site.
