    Does anyone have any info about K-9 handler Jimmy Hale?

    (I've seen several posts from/about Jimmy Hall, whom I did not know, but none from/about Jimmy Hale.)

    As was correctly posted recently by LTC Carson, Jimmy and I were on the 1983 Peacekeeper Challenge team. (Our alternate was Steve Bailey.) Jimmy and I both placed in the "Top Twelve". If memory serves me correctly, he placed sixth; I was number eleven. Maxwell was the ONLY base that year to have ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the primary competitors make the combined ATC-AU worldwide team. (Lackland also had two competitors make the worldwide team, but their contingent was larger than Maxwell's.)

    Jimmy and I became good friends during the months that we trained together. But, time and circumstance drifted us apart. He was bright and motivated, and my guess is that he is successful on whatever path life has taken him.

    I'm looking for the Jim Steele who was stationed at Craig AFB in Selma when it closed. He was in SP. Is the Capt Jim Steele stationed at Maxwell and with Autauga County Sheriff's dept one in the same?

    I believe that they are the same person. Jim posted a remembrance about the murder of Sgt Tom Campbell at the memorial site for Tom, and stated he was at Craig AFB the night it happened. The link is listed below.

    Jimmy Hale retired from the USAF, and now works for a civilian defense contractor. He is still "pushing puppies" -- handling bomb-detection duties in Iraq.

    No shortage of work there. He has been on that job for more than four years!

    Yesterday, I got a phone call from CMSgt Willie Vaughn!

    He left Maxwell and went to Travis, where he retired three years later. He had been to Travis previously*, and had been planning to retire in that area. He then became an insurance salesman in the Sacramento area, and worked his way up in the company. He retired as an "agency director", which means that he did quite well. (When I left active duty the second time, in late 1991, my first job was "attempting" to sell insurance. I once earned $500 in less than an hour; but, many times my weekly pay sheet had a zero at the bottom. It's a tough business.)

    Chief Vaughn's daughter is in college, and was working on a research paper about the Vietnam War. She decided to do a Net search of the words "Vietnam" and her father's name. One of the results was a column that I had written several years ago. In it, I described the chief's baritone voice, telling us during ABGD training, "The mind forgets, but the muscles remember. Do it again!" (I'm sure that many of y'all can remember that phrase. He said it a lot.) So, she visited my Web site, and then sent me an e-mail, and shared my reply with her father, which is how I got the call.

    He is not sure yet whether he will attend the reunion.

    * When he was at Travis the first time, Chief Vaughn had a machinegunner on his ABGD flight. That guy left Travis and went to Korea ... where he was my roommate for a few months. A few months after my return from Korea, I was in the chief's office at Maxwell, and saw my roommate's picture on his desk. They were at Exercise Brim Frost in Alaska. That's how I learned of the connection. Small world.

    Mike, last I heard he was at KI Sawyer in Michigan. I tried to locate him when I lived in Michigan but kept getting the wrong numbers. I thought he might be from Menominee but not sure.

    Mike Sands has died (on Sat, 15 Feb 2014). I did not know Mike. He left Maxwell before I arrived there in Dec of 1981. My good friend Phil Stallard told me the news during a phone call this evening. He and Mike were friends at Maxwell, and they stayed in touch on-and-off over the years. Mike's grown son knew about their friendship and called Phil about the death. Phil is not "computer savvy", and so he asked me to post the notice on this site. Below is the link to Mike's obituary.
